A Long Weekend in Zandvoort With Your Dog: A 3-Day Guide

Back to stories

Zandvoort is, quietly, one of the best dog-friendly weekend destinations in the Netherlands. The Nationaal Park Zuid-Kennemerland starts at the edge of the village, the beach allows off-leash dogs for most of the year, and the train to Amsterdam takes thirty minutes — so you can do a city afternoon without the car. Add Ocean House Zandvoort, a twenty-room boutique hotel ten minutes' walk from the sea where dogs sleep on the bed and eat from a real bowl, and you have a long weekend that two humans and one dog will all leave better than they arrived.

Before you go: dog rules on Zandvoort beach

Zandvoort beach allows dogs off-leash from October through April. Between May and September there is a leash requirement during the day, but mornings before nine and evenings after seven are off-leash and dog-quiet. The northern end of the beach, towards Bloemendaal, is the most popular for dog walkers.

Bring a lightweight long line, poo bags, a collapsible water bowl, and a towel for sandy paws. The hotel has spare towels for the dog — just ask.

Friday: arrival, dunes, first dinner

Aim to arrive between three and five. Check in, drop the bag, fill the water bowl in the room, and walk straight out into the dunes — ten minutes from the front door and you're on a quiet sandy path through the national park.

First dinner is on a dog-friendly terrace in the village. Most Zandvoort restaurants welcome dogs on the outside seating, and a handful inside too. Order something local — a North Sea sole, a glass of cold white — and walk home through the dim, quiet streets of the village.

Saturday morning: the long dune walk

Cross the road behind the hotel and you're in the Nationaal Park Zuid-Kennemerland, one of the largest dune reserves in the Netherlands. There are marked routes from one to twelve kilometres, mostly off-leash, with views of the sea and (if you're lucky) European bison grazing in the distance.

Aim for a two-hour loop. Bring water, treats, and a small backpack with a sandwich for yourself. Be back at the hotel by lunch — the dog will sleep until dinner.

Saturday afternoon: Amsterdam without the car

Here is the secret weapon of a Zandvoort weekend: the direct train to Amsterdam Centraal takes 30 minutes, and dogs travel for free (under 15 kg) or for a small day ticket (over 15 kg). Leave the dog napping at the hotel — most rooms allow this — or take him along for a canal-side coffee.

Three hours in Amsterdam is enough for a museum, a stroll through the Jordaan, and a small purchase you didn't need. Train back in time for the sunset on Zandvoort beach.

Saturday evening: sunset, beach, dinner

Zandvoort faces directly west. The North Sea sunset, in good weather, is the single best thing about the trip. Walk the dog to the beach an hour before sundown, find a quiet spot away from the beach pavilions, and let the colour change do its work.

Dinner at one of the beach pavilions that stays open into the evening — most are dog-friendly on the terrace. Order the catch of the day, a glass of red, walk home through the sleeping village.

Sunday: slow morning, slow drive home

Late breakfast at the hotel. A second coffee on the terrace. One more walk along the sea — short this time, just to say goodbye. Check out at noon, drive home with a dog who will sleep for two days straight and a head a little quieter than when you arrived.

Where to stay in Zandvoort with your dog

Ocean House Zandvoort is a twenty-room boutique hotel a ten-minute walk from the beach, primarily designed for couples, where dogs are genuinely welcomed — not tolerated. No extra fees, no surcharges, no rooms-at-the-back-of-the-corridor policy. A dog bed and bowl in the room on request, dog towels at reception, and the kind of staff who know your dog's name by check-out.

Air-conditioning in every room, a quiet location away from the boulevard, and the dunes ten minutes from the front door. The ideal base for a couples' weekend with the dog — and easy to combine with an Amsterdam city trip.
